Social Anxiety has affected 10.6% of Australians at some time in their life, with 12.8% of women and 8.4% of men, having had the disorder at some point. Therefore , it is evident that social phobia is more common in women than men. The 2007 survey, The Mental Health of Australians found that 20% of social phobia sufferers rated their condition as causing severe or very severe interference in their lives, in the preceding 12 month period. 5.7% of women and 3.8% of men had had social anxiety disorder in the 12 months prior to the interview. Social Anxiety can affect one’s home life, social life, work , study and close relationships so accessing appropriate treatment is very important.
